What do you get when you take two men, a teenage boy and a newborn baby? If you’re thinking anything beside a sweet five minute short film about the bond between a child and their parent(s), the internet has ruined you. For those of you who imaged the not-creepy thing, this film’s for you.
Fathers & Son is a simple, yet powerful, story about the love any father, no matter how unready he may be to play the role, has for his child. Jason (Lee Shorten) and Andrew (Jeremy Leroux) are new parents to their adopted son, Liam (Bowie River McCarthy). Liam’s teenage birth father, Carter (Patrick Lubczyk), is desperate to see the baby and attempts to kidnap the child to reunite the family he didn't know hw had til it was too late. See, I told you it was simple.
What makes this film so spectacular is the performers, especially those of Shorten and Lubczyck. When Jason stops and confronts Carter over his attempted crime, both are afraid of losing the child they love. Jason and Andrew finally have their family but only at the expense of Carter’s but we know which side right lands on even as Carter’s painful loss – young and scared and utterly heartbroken - makes you feel bad for him, even while his actions were wrong on so many levels. Jason can see it, too, and the worry he feels over seeing his child in someone else’s arms is (somewhat) pushed back by the concern he feels for the lost boy holding that same child.
There’s a lot of emotion crammed into this short film. From the opening moments where Andrew is fretting over his own husband taking care of Liam while he’s taking a shower (new parent worry right there) to Jason’s face-to-face with Carter, every moment gives you the feels. So take the five-ish minutes and watch it. I’ve even included it right here so you don’t even need to click a link, though you should so you can like it and tell them directly how awesome you think it is.
