Christoph Paul is sick. But in a good way. Much like his previous works, under both his name and Mandy DeSandra, Slasher Camp for Nerd Dorks is a twisted, darkly humored satire with the strangely sweet Jason Voorheesbeg taking center stage. A sad and lonely figure, the young would-be killer is as far from his non-Jew’d psuedo namesake as could be.

Jason, meant to grow up to be a vicious serial killer, suffers from several issues. The most prominent, Slasher Anxiety, keeps him from doing what he should love and excel at. Because he’s such a terrible psycho he’s forced to attend one of the country’s most pathetic summer camps, where, like little Angela from Sleepaway Camp, he’s mistreated by the more popular kids. Who knew a murder could inspire sympathy?
While the idea of one who yearns to blood-let invoking such feeling seems oxymoronic, Christoph Paul pulls it off with ease. From the current emotional pain to Jason’s past psychological scars, he’s more deserving of understanding than Laurie Strode (Halloween) herself.
The read is smooth and easy, quickly moving you through the story until you wind up on the last page, surprised its over so soon. Even at its… ickiest… you won’t want to put this book down. There’s no “one more page” as the next line begs to be read and you’ll soon find yourself sucked into Paul’s twisted little world of killers and victims and the strange new country where anything can happen.
If you’ve never read his books before (and you should especially Great House House, which is now my second favorite book from him) you don’t know what you’re missing. Fix that and pick up your copy of Slasher Camp for Nerd Dorks right frikking now. You’ll love it to death.
Freddy Versus Jason meets Wet Hot American Summer.
Jason Voorheesberg has struggled to become the great slasher his mom believes he can be and has as bad case of Slasher Anxiety. He is sent to one of the worse ranked camps for young slashers: Slasher Camp for Nebulous Youth #987.When she drops Jason off at the camp, he gets bullied by the Jock Slashers and is attacked by the rich, snooty protagonists of the rival Final Camp across the lake. He hates the camp and is considered the worst slasher by the Pred counselors. Even though he makes a friend with Slasher Candybee Wamack and develops a forbidden relationship with a Slazer (Final Girl who slays Slashers), he struggles even more with his slasher anxiety. Can love (and homicide) conquer all and save Jason from a life of mediocrity?
