As anyone who watched Game of Thrones' season five finale, Queen Cersei was paraded through town buck naked before all the hateful peasants before she was allowed to return to the Red Keep. This was done as punishment for the crime of adultery, something her deceased husband was famous for. Of course, King Robert was never shaved and stripped for his dalliances - he is a man, after all, and would never be treated in such a manner. But his widow, on the other hand, has a vagina and as such, is a lesser creature. Or so says Game of Thrones logic.
Cersei Lannister may very well be the strongest (female) character in all of the Seven Kingdoms. She has survived her husband's infidelities, her father's cruelty, the murder of her first borne and her brother's rape. She wields power like Elizabeth I, by playing the role of a simple woman who can achieve nothing without a man guiding her as she moves them all around the board like a boss. She is the power behind the throne and if she'd been born a boy would have out done Alexander the Great in half the time. So to see her dragged so low for simply expressing her sexuality was disturbing, especially how it was done.
When she was stripped naked and forced to walk among those who despised her, it was to use her own body to shame her. For someone so proud of who she is and unafraid to grab what she wants, even if society considers her a whore for it, to use something she's proud of to bring her pain is pure torture. Nudity should never be something that is forced on someone and to use it as a way to shame is cruel. No matter what evils she has done, nothing makes her deserve such treatment, especially when plenty of others, far more public about their actions, are guilty of the same - and worse. Like, oh, I don't know, her rapist brother Jamie? His crime is actually a crime worthy of punishment, yet he's been "redeemed" and I should buy that he's a fucking good guy now?
Um, no. Jamie is a horrible person - remember when he casually pushed Bran out the window, hoping to kill the boy? I'd say that's worse than hopping in your cousin's bed, don't you? But, of course, he has a penis and would never be treated like, well, a woman. Again, women are lesser things, so, y'know.
Okay, back to the walk.
Watching Cersei as she made her way through the crowd, who kept pointing out what a whore she was (by people flashing their bits, no less), she tried her damnedest to keep her "resting bitch face" in place. But there were times where her true feelings broke through and, because Lena Headey is a fanfuckingtastic actor, the detractors felt sympathy for the Queen of Heartless. After five years of pissing people off and fans wanting her dead, things finally went too far and there were feels. That woman deserves a damn Emmy for this performance. She took something ugly and gave such a performance, no one on this show will ever outdo her.
Great job, HBO. You shamed her into pity. And you did it in the worst way possible. You used her own body against her. And I kind of hate you for it. The proudest of them all was made to breakdown when she was placed on display like an object to be ogled.
I can't wait to see her back to form and out for blood - I really hope that High Swallow dies slowly and painfully and in inhumane ways. I've loved her since day one; she demands respect and refuses to be treated like a man's unequal, even though she does play the role of docile woman when needed - after all, her sex has worked against her since birth - to accomplish her goals. She may be evil, but she's evil with a mission; the perfect antagonist.
And even her Walk of Shame cannot destroy her. Nothing can destroy her strength, her resolve, her strength. And I know that whatever she devises for her tormentors will put Joffery's bloodlust to fucking shame. What was done to her was unforgivable. What she'll do in return will be unforgettable.
Long live the Queen.
